It’s finally done!  My latest resin quilt “the little quiet things” is fully completed!  I’m so excited about the framing of it.  This grey, gentle shadowbox suits it perfectly.

This resin quilt is all about the strength, gentleness and pain of being quiet.  As a young girl I was very quiet and experienced a range of aspects of it.  This quilt embraces the whole topic for me – the beauty and strength of quiet companionship, the gentleness of nurturing, the quiet observation of nature through a child’s eyes, the strength of sacrifice, and the pain of wanting to speak but not quite knowing how.

Here is a close up so you can really see the stitching:

Here it is from the side:

See this little cup? For scale I can just fit the tip of my pinkie finger in it. Isn’t there something so simple and whole about it? I found sets of these in a pound shop in the UK, bought three and have been making artwork with them for years. . It’s the smallness of it that reminds me of being quiet. Also, the whole, self contained circle it forms. Sometimes being quiet is calm and complete, like meditation. . This is a piece of my recent resin quilt “the little quiet things”. It’s about the strength, gentleness and pain of being quiet. Being quiet has so many different forms and repercussions. . . . . #mindfulness #mindfulnessart #jennykiehnart #quiltingwithintention #quiltingismytherapy #contemportaryquilt #contemporaryquiltartist #quilt #ashevilleartist #asheville #828isgreat #ashevillenc #avltoday #childrenseemagic #childrenart #familiesareforever #sculpture #wallsculpture #shadowboxart #artistsofinstagram #lifeofanartist #artstudio #artinprogress #inthestudio #inspiration #creativeprocess #creativity #ipreview via @preview.app

This one is for me and my sister. Things were a little unstable for us growing up, so we stuck together. We had to be quiet and well behaved, especially when we were quite little. The good thing was we learned a lot of self control, which has proven to be a strength for both of us. . There is such strength in quiet companionship. . Eggs are very evocative for me. The main things I do are give birth to people and creative ideas, nurturing them and raising them so they can reach their full potential. . These beautiful little eggs are so small and delicate. They are just over a centimeter long, and sat so quietly in their nest. They are also from the natural world right around my home, which I find quite evocative too. . They are from a wild bird that made a nest in our shed. We need access to our shed, so I had to move the nest. I was heartbroken when I looked inside and found these in it! . This quilt square has a really special object in it. It’s the dried tail from a blue tailed skink. Blue tailed skinks are beautiful little lizards that love to sun themselves on my porch. Their tails are bright blue in the summer light and are designed to attract predators if a predator gets too close. In a life or death situation, the skink will separate it’s tail from it’s body and escape while the predator goes for the tail. . I feel an affinity with these lizards because they know the value of sacrifice. They can sacrifice their tails to save their lives. It’s a temporary sacrifice – the tail will grow back, but it still hurts. . Sometimes people have to do similar things with their voices. In an unsafe situation they stop using their voice for safety. If this happens in childhood it can take a long time to learn to use your voice again. It’s certainly taken me a long time. However, you can still learn to use it again. And that strategy of being quiet probably kept you safe. . This square is in my most recent resin quilt “the little quiet things”. for people who have had to sacrifice their voices at some point. The skink helps remind me of the strength of sacrifice. . . . . . . #mindfulness #mindfulnessart #jennykiehnart #quiltingwithintention #quiltingismytherapy #contemportaryquilt #contemporaryquiltartist #quilt #ashevilleartist #asheville #828isgreat #ashevillenc #avltoday #naturalformsart #inspiredbynature #sculpture #wallsculpture #shadowboxart #artistsofinstagram #lifeofanartist #artstudio #artinprogress #inthestudio #inspiration #creativeprocess #creativity #wip #ipreview via @preview.app

This artwork is framed in a solid wood custom frame with all archival materials.  I even sewed it onto the matt so it would be completely removable, which is best practice with framing.  The glass is conservation glass which blocks 99% of UV rays from reaching the artwork, so it is designed to last for many years to come.

It will be on exhibit in Asheville from July 19 – Aug 16, so “the little quiet things” won’t be available for shipping until Mon Aug 19th.  I’ll be sending more info on the exhibition as soon as the fliers are finished!  For now, you can mark your calendar to know that the reception will be Fri Aug 2nd from 5pm – 8pm and I’ll be giving a workshop on Sat Aug 3rd.  I can’t wait to tell you more about it!

Thank you for joining me on this journey to making this artwork.  From all the mold making to casting to sewing to framing it has been a long time coming.  If this is the first blog post you’ve seen about it you can read more about making the molds here and the making of this quilt here.

This artwork was extra special for me because it helped me process and find the positive side of what was otherwise a difficult time in my life.  Now that I’ve worked through it I appreciate the skills and lessons I learned and how they have made my life better.  I hope you can find the positive side to your challenges too.

With love and hope,
