I painted this painting after going on my first cruise. This was the first time I had ever been out at sea and experienced the beauty of the clouds over limitless water with my own eyes. I was struck by how the clouds hover and hold an emotional atmosphere, like bastions of peace and calm. All you have to do is stop and enjoy them to feel that peace flooding into you.
To me it feels exactly like my daily meditation. Being truly focused on the present moment feels like this - floating peacefully, holding space, and feeling utterly free and limitless. That's what I wanted to capture in this painting.
It was also important to me to capture the beauty of the undulating sea as it goes off in the distance. I wanted to make this a smooth transition, so you could feel that the rougher "here and now" was directly connected to the infinite horizon, full of positive potential. To do this I spent hours with my tiniest brush making the smallest ripples right before they give way to the smooth sea in the distance. It was a lovely process.
